Our journey continues with a series of Lent studies. You can find the dates and locations on the right of this page. We are also having five Lent Lunches and those details also appear on the right.
In Week 2 of the Lent series we heard the story of Mary anointing the feet of Jesus with perfume at the house of Lazarus who had been raised from the dead. Here is a wonderful musical telling of the story with some beautiful images.
You can read the story in St John's Gospel. To do that please click here
In Week 3 We have been thinking about listening, and how God speaks to us in our prayers and meditation. Using something called Lectio Divina, meaning listening to God through
scripture, we heard Mary's song, the Magnificat, read three times. Pauline explains this and more in her reflections on our meeting in the third week. Click on the link below.
You can read Mary's song from St Luke's Gospel by clicking here.
You can also see and listen to it, set to music below:
In Week 4 we have been discussing honesty and asking ourselves 'are we honest with God'. We have listened to two readings from Isaiah and Psalms. The references are below and you can click on them to read: Isaiah chapter 6 verses 1-8 Psalm 139 You can also see music and images based on Psalm 139 below:
We also looked carefully at a print of Rembrandt's Return of the Prodigal Son and thought about what we could see in it related to honesty. Click on the image to see a larger picture.
And so our journey discovering Prayer concluded with Week 5 of our Lent course. We discussed 'Prayer as Care' and also considered how we could offer forgiveness in challenging circumstances.. We listened to some beautiful music called 'Now the Powers of Heaven' (НЫНЕ СИЛЫ НЕБЕСНЫЯ) from the Russian Orthodox church as we meditated. You can hear this and see some beautiful pictures below:
We listened to a reading from St Luke's Gospel. You can read it by clicking on this link: Luke chapter 19 verses 1-10
At the end of our discussion we thought about the giving of blessings, and Pauline ended by giving us all Aaron's blessing. You can see it written below and also listen to it, set to music and images.
The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you;
the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.
THE STORY OF JESUS IN THE DESERT
Jesus spent 40 days and 40 nights in the desert. This is the time of the year we call Lent. Here is a cartoon which tells the story in pictures.
